Success! Erin Gruwell was an inner-city English teacher struggling to reach her students. She taught in a district that did not want to invest money into students that no one believed would graduate, no one except Erin Gruwell. She tried new methods, spent her own money to buy new books. Finally, she found the way to break through to them. Let them write! She had them write every day; journaling their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The project soon snowballed. The journals became a book published by her students who all graduated from high school and went on to college.

To Be a Teacher To be a teacher you must first graduate from high school. Then you must go to college and get a Bachelor's Degree from an acredited college or university in a specific teaching field. Even before attaining a teaching job, several certification tests must be passed. Once a person has become a teacher, days are filled with lesson planning, working with students, and committee meeting. People often say that teachers hardly work because of all the breaks and summers off. However, the truth is that teachers work many hours at home lesson planning and grading papers besides what we do at school.
